Workflow

Use Visible Legacy Navigator to Search, Navigate, and Connect.

Visible Legacy compiles a "graph map of academic research" offered as an online information search and navigation web portal called Navigator. Aimed at potential technology licensees in industry and companies seeking emerging academic innovations as part of their business development IP acquisition, the map metaphor is faster than list search since it delivers pre-conneced relevant data (it literally connects the dots).

People and projects are presented in a connected network surrounded by the context of organizations, grants, published works, patents, innovations, news. Interactive timelines, keywords, and summaries work with the map to allow users to search, filter and explore the ecosystem, browse conveniently linked online documents, and find innovations and collaborators that fit their strategic needs.

Navigator is offered free to users through the support of sponsors interested in accelerating the translation of university research to industry.

Search and Navigate

The Navigator Home page has a familiar topic search box. You can select to search by type (People, Organizations, Grants, Technologies, Papers, Patents).

There are bubuttons preset for NIH and NSF Grants and Inteum Technology Publisher technologies.

Navigator Facet Search lets you filter to refine the results using filters for type, by text search, by Organization affiliation, individual investigators by name, and/or feed source.

From the list of results, click on the Title to open the Detail Page overview for that topic and use the View Map button.

Discover and Explore

Within the maps you can follow the story of innovation over time and through interconnections. The elements of the Overview map interact: the map of linked topics, the timeline showing the same topics in time, and the sidebar tabs showing "card" summaries of the topics and keywords. You can double-click a node to re-enter the map on that topic, or click a Title to navigate to that topic. The tabs are color coded as a key to the node types.

Find Fit and Connect

You can "read around" a topic by following the links to online papers, patents, innovation disclosures, and news. Often the co-authors or the connected projects lead to "in between" innovators or the most recent discoveries that are a closer fit to your needs. The curated links in the topic cards allow you to quickly jump to the innovator's public web page and contact information. You can capture the weblink of interesting technologies with a button-click and stave them into your IP workflow and easily share with colleagues.
